Originally intended to release in 2012 and fill catalog entry SP34, the cassette finds the mysterious project retreating into the deepest depths of distant, static drone music, best heard previously on a 2011 split with Dozens on Tranquility Tapes. This time around, the project revels in a frayed and dimly sparkling wash of industrial hums, echoed static, and tectonic harmony. Matching the emotional disorientation and ultimately optimistic themes of Tarkovsky, especially 'Solaris,' 'This Will Heal Us' plays like a forlorn lovers anthem, translated across space and distorted almost beyond recognition. The hopeful spirit and inspired connection remain amidst an unknowable amount of distance. Confused Kundalini doesn't ignore the darker ends of the spectrum, contrasting those vaguely uplifting motifs with slowed runs of Lynchian tones and oddly-angled sound.

It's a confounding experience that highlight the more alien auras of terrestrial drone music.

dean blunt & Elias Rønnenfelt - Lucre LP. Friend encapsulates a lifelong praxis of intuitive music making, delivering a more precise and controlled sound, with versions of songs shifting into focus like recovered memories. Feeling her way through textures, a return to an intimacy and clarity of voice with a melding of refined technique, these soundscapes lay down a framework over time that traces the history of her practice.

james K has been a cosmic point of the aesthetic underground across the world, as a vocalist, producer, artist and collaborator. Her breathy, lilting vocals have floated across some of the past year’s best music. Expanding and ethereal, they make you feel like the call is coming from inside the house. You can trace touch points across her lengthy catalogue, spanning from the foundational urgency of 2013’s debut Rum EP, to the prismatic elasticity of PET (She Rocks!/Dial), to the strange-faced, visceral and, at times, sepulchral intoxication of Random Girl (Incienso), to the universal ecstasy of trip-hop lullaby ‘Scorpio’ (AD 93). To this day, her transmutative career has led K to amass a bouquet of collaborations with artists like Heith, Moin, Fergus Jones + Huerco S., Priori, Yves Tumor, Drew McDowall, LEYA, and others.

Friend is K’s return to the core; each song anchored by the past, present and future: all inherently connected, yet each compressing its own raw emotion, transmuting across a spectrum of fully realized manifestations. K holds a prism to the personal and reflects it outwards, illuminating her blues with a vibrant acceptance of love. Based in New York where she was born and has lived most of her life, there is a constant evolution of the city which she embodies sonically, like the growth, decay and push, pull of relationships and spaces. At the crux of these crossroads is the homespun and ever-evolving DIY rave culture which continues to embody and cycle through lives of its own. This ecology spans across geographical lines and remains the touchstone and core of the james K vocation: the backbone and infrastructure from which her distinctive command of interwoven guitar and electronic arrangements ultimately coalesces. Grafting fragments of the real and the surreal is the provenance she draws from in her thoughtful and emotive international performances including Dekmantel, Sustain Release, Mutek, iii Points, and more. Her international recognition has guided her to the stages of both her contemporaries and pioneers: some of these including James Ferraro, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Morton Subotnick, Nick Leon, Arushi Jain, Malibu, and Priori, among others.

Friend was written and produced in studios between New York and Montreal; featuring collaborations with contemporaries and friends, Special Guest DJ, Francis Latrielle, Ben Bondy, Patrick Holland, Hank Jackson, and Adam Feingold. The new record is anchored by K’s penchant for melody at the forefront, which feature her ‘heavenly vocals. Her delivery glistens with the Elizabeth Fraser effect: carried foremost by feeling, the curvature of her indecipherable lyrics capture the fleeting moment in which euphoria sinks into quiet melancholy,’ and a dreamy flow-state of softly-textured, finitely detailed hi-fi production. K’s willingness to be vulnerable - to delve into/feel her way through rangelessness is her signature: exploring the contours of all genres, and laying the framework for new conversations between artists.

Sysivalo by Ø

Mika Vainio started making a new Ø album in 2014. It is the first solo album on vinyl in four years. While sifting through archived material left idle from earlier projects, a chance encounter with a late uncle's trove of beloved 78rpm classical and opera records prompted the reworking and completion of what would eventually become the album. Spinning dusty records at 33 and 45rpm, Abul Mogard recombined their enduring specters with unfinished sketches from his archive. The resulting soundscape blurs distinctions between his memories and those of another, exquisitely short-circuiting the senses with its waking, dream-like lucidity. The resulting pieces hover over a threshold, a liminal space that harmonizes the old and older material. Voluminous waves of quiet and loud undulate between consonance and dissonance, conjuring imagery of a decaying grandeur that humanity's decadence has surrendered to the elements. Abul Mogard's seemingly abandoned yet vast landscapes are nevertheless intimate with timbral frissons of red-lined distortion. Elusive, yet as tangible as sea spray or smog, they affect the olfactory senses with a rarified, synesthetic quality that modestly engages one's emotional register -- a hypnotic, distinguishing feature long hailed as one of the hallmarks of his work. Looking back, Mogard notes an unexpected influence: "I realize being inspired by Phill Niblock, whose work I had barely known at the time but explored after his passing in 2024. His album Boston Tenor Index changed the way I approached dissonance. It encouraged me to push my sound further, to the edge of a space where I began to feel uncomfortable." The album artwork, created by longtime collaborator Marja de Sanctis, features a photograph taken at the Temple of Jupiter Anxur, an archaeological site overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Captured with an iPhone, the image traces the residual presence of construction techniques and architectural forms of the Romans, where material history is transcribed through contemporary tools. The convergence of ancient and modern technology aims to reverberate the site's lasting spiritual presence -- an echo persisting in what is now perceived as a quiet, emptied space. The Netherlands-based Georgian composer and the German sound artist from Berlin first met in 2019 in the context of a workshop program that took place in Tbilisi, and later worked with Eto Gelashvili, Hayk Karoyi, and Lillevan on the massive Glacier Music II music and book project, released in 2021. This led them to engage in a less conceptually driven form of musicking and real-time composition that corresponds with their respective environments. They draw on traditions such as minimal music or late 1990s and early 2000s electronica to integrate subtle beats with elegiac organ drones, playful melodies with lush textures. The first document of an ever-shifting intergenerational dialogue, Uncontrollable Thoughts is a product of mutual listening outside time. Though Chkheidze and Lippok had access to professional studios, they chose to rent a simple rehearsal space, equipped with only the bare essentials -- bass and guitar amps as well as a small PA -- to maintain immediacy in their working process. The music they made together corresponded to and drew on the respective possibilities and shortcomings of this studio, much like their collaboration in general is characterized by the care with which they approach each other's talents and ideas. While both had loosely defined roles -- Chkheidze was responsible for the free-flowing beat programming and the evocative distortion came courtesy of Lippok, for example -- they individually contributed in different ways to their joint process, which is as free of hierarchies as it is limitless. Hence, the duo's focus on spontaneity and out-of-the-moment emergence makes them organically move beyond tried and tested conventions, resulting in music that seems to suspend time altogether. While there is much that sets Chkheidze and Lippok apart as solo artists, the major shared leitmotif in their respective bodies of work is the sonic engagement with space. Uncontrollable Thoughts is hence best understood as an extension of this practice; as an album that maps the geographies of their minds in motion, tracing musical movements as they melt into each other.

Edition of 300 copies, 45 rpm vinyl

Developed over three years across residencies, tours, and periods of deep listening, “Your Whistle Tells of Landscape” finds Australian sound artist Alexandra Spence continuing her investigations into the perceptual entanglements of sound, place, memory, and imagination. It’s their second album, following their 2020 debut release as a duo, “1”, which saw JJ – John Jones (AV Moves, Geo Rip, among others) – and JS – Jesse Sappell (of Motion Ward) – flex their collaborative energies across an album of deep, textured meanderings in rhythm and sound on the perennial Lillerne Tapes. “peeled” sees the two pick up where they left off and veer into a ~ place ~ of sound, of sorts. This place is likely familiar to those following the duo’s output and goings-on, as one together and as themselves apart, but with a tweak to the framing of projects past, naturally. Where we find ourselves with “peeled” is reflective of the two’s interest in jamming without a specific destination in mind, a distillation of the two’s interests in a range of sounds and styles. This first premise from As Above, So Below is the base point for the setting of what follows. A group of rabble-rousing guerillères from the commune decide to go bowling. They had entered the forest, followed its winding paths, and emerged blind after staring at the universe for too long. No longer able to find their way by observing the stars, they now have to climb on the houses and feel the vernacular roofing to find out in which direction they’re heading. The only striking going on is the sound of the skittles getting scattered, syncopating with saturated basslines, mixed vocal techniques, heavy fx, and feeding into an arsenal of bells and percussions. They start stomping on the alleys as if this was a housewarming party and they had to break in a newly laid wood floor. The sound struck a chord with locals, and huge street parties hosted by ramshackle soundsystems known as sonideros unified the diverse community. So when cumbia rebajada materialized serendipitously in the 1990s, it emphasized and highlighted the memory distortions at the heart of the immigrant experience. Local record collector, selector and sonidero Gabriel Dueñez had been playing cumbia for hours one night when disaster struck: his turntable's motor overheated and slowed down turning the music into a warped groan, with half-speed voices echoing over wobbly accordion drones and splashy drums. But the crowd kept dancing, and Sonido Dueñez realized he'd struck gold -- cumbia rebajada was born. Over the next few years he dubbed a popular series of mixtapes, hawking them at the flea market on the dried-up Santa Catarina riverbed beneath El Puente del papa, the bridge that links downtown Monterrey with Independencia. And these woozy archives became the stuff of legend, poetically but subconsciously shadowing DJ Screw's series of epochal cassettes that appeared over the border in Houston. Beatriz uses Sonido Dueñez's first two tapes as the starting point for Desaceleradas, entering into a dialogue with time, culture and geography as she recalls the sonic ecosystem that surrounded her decades ago, long before she emigrated to the USA. As AI systems scrape, blend and decontextualize culture around the world, leaving vapid slop, Desaceleradas proposes a slower, more careful, and ultimately more human kind of engagement. Very clear nods to late 90s glitch ala Oval, Mille Plateaux and such like, and it should be of absolutely no surprise to anyone that Craig Tattersall is involved here in some regard - Hood and especially The Humble Bee particularly clear touchstones for what the duo are aiming for. At one point, she even intones to a subject, “your face is coloured differently in the sun.”

On “Heart Shaped Burn”, Rupert Clervaux’s visceral percussion ignites a drone-and-drums ritual inspired by an experience working the night shift in Australia. “It’s named after a heart shaped burn of a patient,” says Dania. “Her partner had poured scalding water on her chest. She was initially timid and closed off, but when I pointed out the perfectly heart shaped burn we laughed together, both realising the dark irony.” Elsewhere, downtempo beats and chants spiral on “Car Crash Premonition,” a song written in the aftermath of a harrowing taxi ride to the studio at 3am. “He was a reckless taxi driver, and I thought ‘this is it,’ and then a second later my life flashed before my eyes and we narrowly avoided a crash.”

Dania created Listless’ landscape of dark irony, deep introspection, and liberation from the daylight world. A blurring of three vastly different heads into a single disjointed, but fluid organism, How So? finds Yuta Matsumura (The Lewers, Keanu Nelson), Amelia Besseny (Troth, Impatiens) and Cooper Bowman (Troth, CD3) working with vocals, melodica, deeply pulled samples, guitar, drum machine, synths and resourceful percussion. An Elixa-blueprint of sideways ambient rituals, fog-thick melodica dub and paranoid trip hop by way of Sydney’s pioneering industrial collagists, the LP recirculates beyond its original 150-copy confines for those who missed its first apparition.

How So? by Th Blisks
Susumu Yokota - Acid Mt.
